How To Use A Harmonically Balanced Puller?

A harmonic balancer is part of a car engine. Also known as a harmonic damper, it harvests energy from engine vibrations and uses it to balance rotating components in an internal combustion engine. Other features of the device include its metal casing and rubber interior. The exterior is usually aluminum, but it requires a special tool, called a harmonic balancer puller, to remove it from the crankshaft of the car's motor, as it has a rubber mount on the crankshaft. The crankshaft pulley is the part of the vehicle engine that connects to the crank and drives the water pump and other accessories, such as the alternator. It also provides a mounting point for a belt that can power other components.

This article will guide you through how to use a harmonic balancer puller.

A step-by-step guide to using the harmonic balancer puller,Follow the steps below to use the harmonic balancer puller.

Step 1: Prepare the harmonic balancer for removing the serpentine belt

Prepare to remove the serpentine belt from the lower crankshaft pulley by setting under the hood and removing any access panels that may get in the way when using tools. Park on firm ground, not a slope or hill, so you can balance near the motor during removal.

Step 2: Apply Penetrating Lubricant

Apply penetrating lubricant liberally around all four rubber mounting lugs. You may need to wait a moment for the penetrating lubricant to be absorbed by the damper.

Step 3: Insert the Harmonic Balancer Puller

Insert the harmonic balancer puller into the balancer's hub and place it halfway between each mounting lug so that the two connection points on either side of the balancer are balanced. With the tool properly positioned, hand tighten the harmonic balancer bolts from the crank pulley until all four bolts are equally snug against the engine bay and against the balancer mounting lugs.

Step 4: Use a Wrench

Using an impact wrench or torque wrench with extensions, carefully remove each balancer bolt in turn from either side of the harmonic balancer pulley to avoid damage to adjacent components. While pulling the tool away from the engine, apply even pressure to all four bolts at the same time until each pulley bolt is removed. If you used a penetrating lubricant for best results, the balancer should now easily separate from the engine's balancer pulley.

Step 5: Apply the Harmonic Balancer Puller

Stack up the harmonic balancer puller and use it to remove the harmonic balancer. This is very easy if you use a puller kit. If you don't use this installation tool, you may even have some trouble removing the old balancer, as it is difficult to pry off the crankshaft without damaging the engine or the balancer.

Step 6: Attach the Puller to the Harmonic Balancer

The puller has a bolt that goes through its body and screwed into a threaded hole at one end of the "V" or triangular base. Once you have the threads, put a lock washer on the crank bolt and tighten with a torque wrench. Repeat for the other side of the puller. The best way to do this is to force-tighten the screws with a large screwdriver or pry bar. This tool will give you some leverage to open the opening between the steering wheel and the tire. Be careful when handling large pry bars as you can easily get injured.

Step 7: Install the New Harmonic Balancer

Clean your engine and put the new harmonic balancer in place for assembly on the rest of the car.
